Floris Neusüss - Shadow Catcher: Camera-less photography

Floris Neusüss has dedicated his whole career to extending the practice, study and teaching of the photogram. Alongside his work as an artist, he is known as an influential writer and teacher on camera-less photography.
Neusüss brought renewed ambition to the photogram process, in both scale and visual treatment, with the Körperfotogramms (or whole-body photograms) that he first exhibited in the 1960s. Since that time, he has consistently explored the photogram’s numerous technical, conceptual and visual possibilities.
His works often deal in opposites: black and white, shadow and light, movement and stillness, presence and absence, and in the translation of three dimensions into two. By removing objects from their physical context, Neusüss encourages the viewer to contemplate the essence of form. He creates a feeling of surreal detachment, a sense of disengagement from time and the physical world. Collectively, his images explore themes of mythology, history, nature and the subconscious.

"Cuando Machi Tawara nació, el 31 de diciembre de 1962, la mayor parte de sus familiares quiso esperar veinticuatro horas antes de registrar oficialmente su nacimiento. No sólo el 1 de enero parecía un día más favorable para un cumpleaños, sino que como 1962 era el año del Tigre, la creencia popular era que las mujeres nacidas durante ese año iban a espantar a los hombres cuando estuvieran en edad de casarse. Sin embargo, esto no preocupó en lo más mínimo al padre de Machi, un físico, quien siguió adelante y reportó la fecha de nacimiento tal cual. Su acción fue profética, porque la niña creció para convertirse en portavoz elocuente de la shinjinrui o "la nueva generación," a quienes poco interesan las creencias tradicionales, mucho menos la institución tradicional del matrimonio. "

Esmerine- Snow Day For Lhasa

 

"Montreal-based visual artist Brad Todd created a series of minimal looped video pieces projected during Esmerine's album launch concert in Montreal in June 2011, using found footage of owls as his source. This video for "Snow Day For Lhasa" juxtaposes two of Todd's treatments, which degrade/reify one against the other in a long visual crossfade of sorts.

"Snow Day For Lhasa" is the centerpiece of Emserine's La Lechuza album. The record is dedicated to Lhasa de Sela (1972-2010) -- it snowed gently and constantly for 4 days in Montreal following her death on New Year's Day 2010. "Snow Day For Lhasa" features lyrics, guest lead vocal, and piano by Patrick Watson, who also tracked and mixed the song with Esmerine. "Snow Day For Lhasa" was originally made available as streaming audio and in limited release to radio broadcasters on 01 January 2011, the first anniversary of Lhasa's death. Lhasa loved owls"

Algunos retratos de personas sin techo / Homeless portraits - Lee Jeffries

"Lee Jeffries es un fotógrafo inglés que vive en Manchester y que se dedicó por mucho tiempo a retratar eventos deportivos. Un encuentro casual con una joven sin hogar en las calles de Londres cambió su enfoque artístico para siempre. Él recuerda que en esa ocasión había robado una foto de una chica joven sin hogar acurrucada en un saco de dormir. Jeffries sabía que la joven lo había visto, aunque su primera reacción fue huir; algo le hizo quedarse y conversar con la niña. Su percepción acerca de las personas sin hogar cambió por completo al punto de convertirlas en “objeto” de su arte.
Los modelos en sus fotografías son las personas sin hogar que ha conocido en Europa y en Estados Unidos. Se trata de fotografías que retratan sus convicciones y su compasión. Un testimonio en forma de imagen que ciertamente cala hondo, fotografías conmovedoras al punto de lo inquietante…… Quede claro que publicarlas un día antes de la Navidad occidental no ha sido casual, valga como un testimonio gráfico de la deficiente solidaridad hacia el prójimo que poseen nuestras sociedades, tan frenetizadas por la voracidad del consumo y el poder."

"Lee Jeffries lives in Manchester in the United Kingdom. Close to the professional football circle, this artist starts to photograph sporting events. A chance meeting with a young homeless girl in the streets of London changes his artistic approach forever. Lee Jeffries recalls that, initially, he had stolen a photo from this young homeless girl huddled in a sleeping bag. The photographer knew that the young girl had noticed him but his first reaction was to leave. He says that something made him stay and go and discuss with the homeless girl. His perception about the homeless completely changes. They become the subject of his art. The models in his photographs are homeless people that he has met in Europe and in the United States: «Situations arose, and I made an effort to learn to get to know each of the subjects before asking their permission to do their portrait.» From then onwards, his photographs portray his convictions and his compassion to the world."
