"I Am a Hotel is a 1983 Canadian made for TV short musical film, written by Leonard Cohen and Mark Shekter and directed by Allan F. Nicholls.
The storyline is based around imaginary events in the King Edward Hotel in Toronto, and the guests' (usually romantic) interactions with each other.

Leonard Cohen had the idea for the film based upon his personal experiences and his song The Guests. It was originally intended for the Canadian pay TV network C-Channel, but when the network collapsed, the production was completed by City TV with financial assistance from Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and the Canadian Film Development Corporation.

Scenes:

Cohen features frequently, as an amused bystander ('the Resident'). Extensive dance routines in scenes 2 and 3 were choreographed by Ann(e) Ditchburn, who also dances as the Gypsy wife in scene 3. There are five scenes, each based around a Cohen song.

1. THE GUESTS (in which the characters enter via the lobby and are taken to their rooms; The bellboy and chambermaid meet in the corridor; and the manager and his wife apparently have angry words in the lobby after which she strides off).

2. MEMORIES (in which the bellboy pursues the chambermaid around the laundry and ballroom).

3. THE GYPSY WIFE (in which the manager's wife, in fetching attire, dances on the boardroom table).

4 CHELSEA HOTEL # 2 (in which the two lovers try, and fail, to make love, and the admiral and diva at last face each other across the hallway).

5 SUZANNE (in which scenes of Suzanne with Cohen are interspersed with shots of the two couples reunited and dancing together, and the hotel manager distraught and then drinking at the bar).

A short epilogue repeats the opening material from 'The Guests'.
The final credits give the makers as 'Blue Memorial Video Ltd' and dedicate the piece to David Blue (1941-1982).

Artist Bio:

"Born and living in N.Y., Ruth Marten has worn several hats, in spite of the hair. From 1972 to 1980 she was an important figure in the tattoo underground and, as one of the few women practicing the craft, influenced people's ideas about body decoration. Working during the disco and punk era, she also tattooed in the Musée D'Art Moderne de La Ville de Paris during the 10th Biennale de Paris in 1977.

Hired by Jean-Paul Goude for her first illustration (and for 30 years after) she illustrated books, albums and magazines and is most associated with the "Year in Provence" books of Peter Mayle, art-directed for A.A.Knopf by Carol Devine Carson. That love of the printed image informs her newest interest: changing, through over-drawing and collage, the configuration and content of 18th century engravings.

Her book Histoire un-Naturelle, published for her 2007 London exhibit at Isis Gallery, is a catalogue of the work that came on the heels of a 17 year obsession with hair. Her drawing, painting and sculpture has been exhibited at the Aldrich Museum (Pop Surrealism, 1998), the Tang Museum (Hair, Untangling a Social History, 2004), the Halsey Institute (Hair on Fire, 2009) and is represented in many collections -- most recently in the de Young Museum in San Francisco."

About the film:
"The film was shot in 2011. We started the project spontaneously in february in Burkina Faso and two shots from there even survived over the process. we continued to shoot additional scenes at the north sea cost without still knowing all of the story we would be telling at the end. Then in Hamburg we shot most of the scenes and finished it in brussels in july.
All in all I would say: round about 7 days of shooting. Lots of nice shots we didn't put in the final editing.
Shot on canon eos 5d mkII with older nikon prime lenses: 35mm 1.4 // 50mm 1.2 // 85mm 1.4 // 105mm 1.8. All pics are manually shot single photos in sraw2 format."

Patti Jordan was born in New York City and lives and works in Montclair.
Patti Jordan was recently accepted into The Drawing Center’s online curated registry, “The Viewing Program” (NYC). Jordan received an Honorarium in 2009 for works included in “Lineweight,” a contemporary drawing exhibition at Truman State University Art Gallery, (Kirksville, MO). Two of her works have also been published in Manifest Creative Research Gallery’s 2010 International Drawing Annual. Jordan lectures on art and has written reviews for ArtCat Zine. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honors from Pratt Institute and holds a Master of Fine Arts, Summa Cum Laude, from Montclair State University. She exhibits widely.

“Working with ink, water, graphite and solvent, Patti Jordan squeegees and pushes ink across the surface of large sheets of Fabriano paper. While not producing delicate soulful swoops with a hand-held Chinese brush, Jordan pushes and pulls her medium, coaxing and building the black ink so that it results in bold, textured and abstractly cratered and rippled layers. Creatures, bones, eyes, limbs and orifices appear, collide and condense on her horizontal and vertical scroll-like pieces, constructions of the imagination, psyche and random gesture.”

"Between May 1818 and May 1819, Charles-Frédéric Soehnée filled three albums with an extraordinary series of watercolour paintings and sketches. These, together with a single lithograph, 'as far as we know, […] make up the bulk, if not the entirety of Soehnée 's œuvre .'
Soehnée had been born in 1789 in the Rhineland town of Landau, which at that time was part of France: his odd-looking surname is the Gallicized equivalent of Söhne . His family moved to Paris before the turn of the nineteenth century.
From about 1810, Soehnée was a pupil of the Neoclassical painter and illustrator Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson. The best likeness we have of him is that painted by his friend and fellow-pupil Pierre-Louis de Laval (or Delaval ), in 1812.
Excepting a few conventional landscapes, Soehnée's paintings are almost entirely devoted to fantastical and grotesque subjects: groups of faceless figures are juxtaposed with variously ratlike and batlike creatures, or skeletal birds; and there is a strange preponderance of stilts, whips and fishing-rods.
The titles that Soehnée gave to some of his pictures are further suggestive of a 'gothic' sensibility: 'Journey to Hell;' 'Cradle of Death;' 'A Place of Silence;' and 'The Winds, Grouped around Plague and Death, Cover the Earth with Tombs…'
At the time these works were executed, it is likely that Soehnee was already engaged in research that would culminate, in 1822, with the publication of a technical treatise in which he disputed the traditional account of Van Eyck's having invented oil-painting, arguing instead 'for the existence, since antiquity, of a form of oil painting, or a mixture of encaustic and varnish, which in his view, could be the only explanation for the durability and preservation of ancient paintings.'
Thereafter, Soehnée seems to have abandoned art, and to have 'become a technician, and a dealer; [and] not content with theorising, he perfected a varnish which was extremely successful—Delacroix mentions it several times in his journal—and which is still in use today.'
The present images were lifted from Patrick Mauriès' catalogue Charles-Frédéric Soehnée (1789-1878): Un voyage en Enfer which was published by Le Promeneur in association with the Galerie Jean-Marie Le Fell, to coincide with an exhibition...

La boca

En la encañada
había piedras como huesos de un animal prehistórico
                   que se desbarató
antes de alcanzar nuestro valle.

Un gran cráneo
quedó detenido en la pendiente con la boca abierta
y el resto del cuerpo se dispersó hacia el río.

Yo trepaba la pendiente
y me detenía frente a esa boca, una oquedad
donde el viento se huracanaba,
                                              y escuchaba
murmullos, palabras que se formaban a medias
          y luego, sin decir nada, se diluían.

Nunca hubo una frase clara. La boca
como un oráculo piadoso
trababa sus propias frases ante el niño:
                        lo sé ahora
y le agradezco la vida ciega.

Biografía:

José Watanabe (1946 - 2007) nació en Laredo, Trujillo (norte del Perú). Su madre, de origen serrano, fue enganchada en plena juventud para trabajar en las haciendas azucareras. Su padre era un inmigrante japonés con una distinción muy especial: poseía una gran cultura. Leía mucho, era pintor. Sabía hablar inglés y francés.

Por su vocación plástica, por la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Trujillo.
Realizó estudios de arquitectura en la universidad Federico Villarreal.

Publicó su primer libro, Álbum de familia, en 1971 que mereció el premio Poeta Joven del Perú. Su segundo libro, El huso de la palabra (1989), fue considerado por la crítica nacional como el poemario más importante de la década de los ochenta. Antígona "lo muestra como un dramaturgo de mucha potencia".

Mary Jo Maraldo’s work grows out of her many years’ experience living and studying in Japan, and has been exhibited across the United States. Her avant garde approach is anchored in the tradition of Japanese abstract sumi art, also called bokusho, and also inspired by the ancient tortoise-shell scripts first discovered in China. One of her most dramatic adaptations of calligraphic arts is to sculpt three-dimensional representations of Chinese characters, using a variety of materials, including rocks, metal tubing, and netting.

"Andrés Marroquín Winklemann's photographs in the series "Zapallal | Yurinaki" have the same bright, intense and episodic nature as my early childhood memories. LA VIDA
Martín Ramírez nació en 1895 en el estado de Jalisco, México y murió en el hospital psiquiátrico de Dewitt, California, en 1963, un periodo traumático. Vivió la revolución de Pancho Villa y Zapata y la de los Cristeros contra el excesivo poder de la iglesia católica, ambas en México y, por si fuera poco, también la Gran Depresión del 29 en Estados Unidos.
Ramírez se desenvolvió en estos escenarios convulsos, de los que apenas emergió sin habla, física y psíquicamente maltrecho.
En 1925 emigra a California en busca de trabajo, que consigue primero en la construcción de los ferrocarriles y después en las minas. Manda dinero a su mujer, que sigue en Jalisco con sus cuatro niños muy pequeños y una gran deuda que liquidar invertida en unas pocas hectáreas y un ranchito de adobe. El crak del 29 y la orden de no dar trabajo a extranjeros y deportar a los mexicanos a su tierra le dejan, de nuevo, con las manos vacías. Los amigos vuelven. Martín no.
En 1931, sin trabajo, sin domicilio, confuso -no habla inglés-, le detiene la policía en un estado tal que deciden confinarlo en un manicomio.
Aunque escapa en varias ocasiones los diagnósticos, implacables -depresión, demencia catatónica, esquizofrenia irrecuperable-, acaban con su rebeldía. Los últimos 30 años de su vida los pasa internado en el DeWitt State Hospital, el psiquiátrico del que no saldrá hasta su muerte.

EL ARTISTA
¿En qué momento este jornalero inculto y sin preparación alguna empieza a pintar? ¿Cuál es su motivación? Ramírez recolecta papeles de toda clase, sábanas de papel, papel de liar, cuartillas y revistas que luego pega con un engrudo preparado por él mismo a base de harinas y su propia saliva. Utiliza betún de los zapatos, zumos de frutas, pinturas que encera con las cerillas que luego emplea a modo de pinceles. Cualquier cosa le sirve. Son las herramientas de un superviviente, un pobre inmigrante institucionalizado.
Lejos de los círculos artísticos e ideológicos de los Rivera, Siqueiros, Kahlo….. Ramírez consigue elaborar un lenguaje propio, único, tan reconocible en la composición como en el repertorio de imágenes que recrea. Presenta los dramas de su vida en forma de mapas que alcanzan hasta los tres metros de largo.
De su México natal, las iglesias, plazas, pueblos, madonas, vírgenes y pistoleros a caballo, revolucionarios armados con la doble canana sobre el pecho. De Estados Unidos, trenes, túneles interminables, nichos, cuevas como bocas oscuras que se abren camino a lo profundo, lo que no se conoce, lo que asusta, lo que da miedo.

By attaching tiny figures onto the second and minute hands of each watch, Wilcox has made unique, animated scenes from everyday observations and imagined situations.

"The miniature figure on the second hand moves around constantly and the figure on the minute hand appears stationary. I spent time thinking about the relationship between the two people, how one passes another repeatedly and I tried to think about when that situation happens in real life or in an imagined scenario. I altered head and arm angles of found model figures and made objects such as the LCD tv with wire and plug. The glass domes are hand blown to fit each watch exactly."

SINOPSIS

Patio de locos es un recorrido a través de los espacios, los pensamientos y la soledad de un conjunto de personajes que conviven dentro de un manicomio. Todos ellos permanecen atrapados en un ambiente enrarecido en el que, de una u otra manera, evaden o postergan un presente insatisfactorio. En este escenario observamos cómo se construye una nueva realidad, gracias a la inusual lógica de los pacientes psiquiátricos y a la débil convicción en lo real que tienen sus custodios.

Una indagación poética sobre los límites del sentido común y sobre la omnisciencia de la voz autorial. Un poemario de lenguaje impactante y alucinado, con personajes (y narradores) en tensión consigo mismos, capaces de transmitirnos una nueva versión de las cosas, atravesada por la locura y por el exceso de razón.

Several years ago, Rhapsody released a 21-minute video called 'Bill Evans On The Creative Process', a badly edited reduction of a 1966 TV program introduced by Steve Allen, the first host of the now famous 'Tonight Show'. This short film is a restoration of the original 45-minute telecast. Here is Evans, his hair slicked back, his terrible teeth uncapped, a cigarette waving in the air, in intense conversation with his composer brother Harry Evans (a professor of music at Louisiana State University) on the nature of creativity in jazz.

This documentary features in-depth discussion of Evans' internal process of song interpretation, improvisation, and repertoire. Through demonstration on the piano, Bill uses the song 'Star Eyes' to illustrate his own conception of solo piano and how to interpret and expand upon the melody and underlying chord structure.

"Every time that I would return to this house I would notice that it had changed. Often it was a minor change, some rearranged papers and a few empty beer cans in the corner. The change was at times more substantial, like arriving to find the house full of large tree branches that had recently been set on fire and extinguished, water still dripping from the ceiling. On another occasion there might be a strong wind blowing through the window. Once I arrived to find the house gone.

On Initially arriving I would move through the house looking for areas or situations to photograph. If nothing seemed to interest me I would move things around or do some spray painting. The painting was done in much the same way that one might doodle on a piece of paper. At that point I would return to the camera and explore what ever new potentials existed.

These photographs are not meant to be documents of painting, or sculpture, or even of environmental works. When photographing the space I saw my painting as only an aspect of what was there. The painting did allow me to explore my own gestures. However, it can not be isolated from the broken glass on the floor or a curtain being blown by the wind. No element is of greatest importance. I am most satisfied when the line between evidence of my actions and what is already there is not distinct. These photographs are the product of my involvement with an evolving situation. The house evolving in a primarily linear way toward it's ultimate disintegration, the ocean and light evolving and changing in a cyclical and regenerative manner. My acts, my painting, my photographing, my considering, are part of, not separate from, this process of evolution and change. These photographs are not so much about this process as they are remnants from it. My participation was not so much one of intellectual consideration as one of visceral involvement. "Esta obra maestra de la acústica y la arquitectura fue creada por los Dalmatian Stone Carvers y el arquitecto Nikola Basic en 2005. "The musical Sea Organ (morske orgulje) is located on the shores of Zadar, Croatia, and is the world’s first musical pipe organs that is played by the sea. Simple and elegant steps, carved in white stone, were built on the quayside. Underneath, there are 35 musically tuned tubes with whistle openings on the sidewalk. The movement of the sea pushes air through, and – depending on the size and velocity of the wave – musical chords are played. The waves create random harmonic sounds.
This masterpiece of acoustics and architecture was created by expert Dalmatian Stone Carvers and architect Nikola Basic in 2005, who recently received the European Prize for Urban Public Space for this project. Henry Shipes, Albert Bitterling, Roscoe Collins and others discuss turkey-hunting, gator-grunting and the meaning of life. "Coronet Instructional Films were shown in American schools starting in about 1941. The company was an offshoot of Coronet Magazine, a digest-sized magazine that itself was owned by Esquire, Inc. Owner David Smart was deeply interested in visual education and the power of the film to teach and convince, and built a full studio on his estate in Glenview, Illinois, where at its height hundreds of films were cranked out each year. The films were sold to schools and libraries by a network of distributors and were quite successful -- in 1976 Coronet celebrated its sale of 1 million prints. Most Coronet films were shot in Kodachrome, but Kodachrome prints of many titles are quite rare. It was cheaper to purchase black-and-white prints, and most sales were black-and-white. My process and choice of subject matter stem from growing up in a do it yourself household where I learned to appreciate the power that tools and materials hold. As I explore the garage and search through the basement to solve these pictures, I find new ways of putting old tools and familiar materials to work. “Demonstrations” intends to inspire wonder and curiosity in all viewers." For some reason related to the poetic symmetry of fate, it is fitting that the last speaker of the Yhagan language would live in the southernmost village of the world. The Villa Ukika, with population of 51, is an indigenous village located South East of Puerto Williams, a Chilean village that is in turn South of Ushuaia. Puerto Williams has a population of 3000. It was originally a naval settlement, and the officers of the Chilean navy appear to still constitute the main population here.
The search for Cristina Calderón turned out to be a feat no less challenging than the search of Marie Smith Jones in Anchorage. Having been in touch via email for several months with her granddaughter, who promotes the knowledge of Yaghan language and culture, I had only obtained spotty and vague information as to the whereabouts of “La Abuela” (“Grandma”), as she is known here. When I arrived to Ushuaia, I only knew that she lived in Puerto Williams, which is 20 km. away by crossing the Beagle channel. I did not know, however, that transportation between Ushuaia and Puerto Williams is practically nonexistent at this time of year. I also was not certain to find La Abuela once I managed to cross. But there was no other choice but to try.
I finally managed to hire a transportation in a little rubber boat that crossed me, along with two Australians, to the Isla Navarino in Chile, where Puerto Williams is located. We crossed amidst snow and the frigid wind on the boat that jumped on the waves as if we were horseriding. We had to make an appointment with two immigration officers that met us at Puerto Navarino (an otherwise deserted spot) in order to get our passports stamped (once again). From there, a van took us to the other side of the island, through a dirt road (there are no paved streets or highways here), crossing snow and sleet, until we finally reached our destiny.
I walked into Villa Ukina, which has a spectacular view to the sea and the mountains. The house of La Abuela was in the center of the village. Cristina herself opened the door, and to my relief, knew who I was. But he asked me to come back at 3pm, and with her slight Chilean accent added: “but also you should know that I charge for interviews”.

"Twenty years ago you would have been shot for stepping too close to this monument in Sofia in Bulgaria.
But after the smashing of the Berlin Wall, statues celebrating communist rule appear to be fair game to the graffiti artists of the former Soviet block in Eastern Europe.
An anonymous artist transformed Russian Red Army soldiers from a monument in the city of Sofia, in Bulgaria, into popular superheroes and cartoon characters.
Taking centre stage is Superman with his distinctive red cape and blue suit. To the left is Santa Claus and to the right Ronald McDonald, the mascot of the fast-food giant McDonalds, and the Joker also makes an appearance.
Below the graffiti artist has sprayed "Moving with the times" in Bulgarian black paint. The "artistic vandalism" appeared this morning - but it is still not clear who is behind the colourful display".

"The filmmaker works with his images as if they were a musical score. Around a central theme, he orchestrates variations and modulations that create an impression of a flood of private images arriving from beyond the frame. Pelechian is making a name for himself as a montage filmmaker who tends to inscribe in his works the movement of the world and history. His films are odes, even symphonies that speak about humanity, nature and the cosmos. Man is often seen contending with a strong, encompassing nature that guides, transports and protects him. Pelechian speaks to us about humility and our connection with time. Artavazd Pelechian has been practicing a method of film construction he refers to as «distance montage» since the 60s, in films using either found footage, Our Century or original material, The Seasons. In the early 90s, Pelechian made two spiritual films which are among his simplest and most beautiful productions: The End (1991) and Life (1992), Pelechian's first colour film. Where The End looks towards death, Life is about a birth, consisting mainly of views of a young woman's face in the throes of labour, her heaving body in its hospital room seen as a changing landscape. Two shifts take place: the child is born and the camera shows us this new life; then, in a final shot that re-orders the entire film in retrospect (like the final shot of Pelechian's earlier portrait of peasant life, The Seasons), we see mother and child, faces side-by-side perhaps a year later, mirrors of one another save for the difference in age."

"Médico, poeta, visionario: con estos tres calificativos define a nuestro personaje su biógrafo Otto Joachim Grüsser1, y cualquiera que conozca sumariamente la vida de este personaje del Romanticismo alemán reconocerá que le hace justicia. Esa triple vertiente de su personalidad, desplegada por lo general en los campos correspondientes —como médico estudió con gran finura el botulismo; como poeta, al lado de Uhland, es cabeza del romanticismo suabo; como visionario se hará célebre con el caso de la vidente de Prevorst— se manifiesta de manera conjunta y armoniosa, al final de su vida, en esas curiosas producciones de las que pretendo mostrar algunos ejemplos en este trabajo: las kleksografías.

«Kleksographien» es el nombre dado por Kerner a figuras como las que aquí se muestran; un neologismo no acuñado por él mismo, sino por «un ingenioso amigo del arte y del humor» cuya identidad desconocemos. Después de considerar varias opciones he optado por la mera adaptación al español, pues la traducción del vocablo alemán «Kleks» —borrón, mancha de tinta— habría producido engendros como «borronografías» o «manchografías»; la opción «maculografías» quedaba descartada por el hecho de que el propio Kerner podría haber utilizado el vocablo latino de haber querido...

En su breve introducción a la edición existente de algunas kleksografías, Justinus Kerner nos explica cómo su creciente pérdida de visión, debida a cataratas, ha provocado, por una parte, una mayor torpeza al escribir, que se traduce en profusión de borrones, y por otra en la toma en consideración de las caprichosas formas, aún bien perceptibles para él, que adoptan las gotas de tinta sobre el papel inutilizado para la escritura después de plegarlo del mismo modo que, como ahora recuerda, hacían a veces otros escolares y él mismo en la lejana infancia para divertirse con semejantes productos del azar. La semejanza de este proceder con el test de Rorschach ha sido generalmente reconocida, hasta convertirse en un lugar común. Sin embargo, no he conseguido encontrar un testimonio explícito a este respecto. El autor de referencia en la historia de la «psiquiatría dinámica», Henri F. Ellenberger, da por sentada la influencia de las kleksografías de Kerner, pero sin aportar prueba alguna. Y el propio Rorschach sólo de refilón emplea dicho neologismo sin siquiera asociarlo al médico romántico.

Con todo, algo hay en el origen de estas «kleksografías» que escapa a la propia voluntad y que, por lo tanto, les confiere esa cualidad misteriosa que su autor reconoce en dos de los primeros poemas:

De la muerte los heraldos
desde la noche de tinta
traen del Hades los grabados.
(¡Corazón, nada sabías!).
